Invasion Day is known as 'Australia Day' by the settlers - Also known as 'Survival Day' by some of the remaining First Nations peoples. Some First Nations gatherings were held on the 25th January and named the 'Last day of freedom'.
Before 1788 there were approximately 700 languages spoken throughout Australia with an estimated population of between 750 000 and 2,000,000 First Nations people. Today First Nations people make up 2% of the entire Australian population - around 550,00 people (2011 census).
The number of First Nations people has been reduced dramatically since European settlement, they were shot, diseased, raped, tortured, had their children taken from them, punished for practising their customs and lore, continually jailed for trivial crimes and were forcefully removed from traditional lands. Most First Australians were herded onto very small parcels of unwanted land and made dependent on the settlers government and then cruelly criticized for their plight.
In 2013 First Nations people are forced to live with the abuse of the general racist society and discriminatory governments in Australia.
