The Apology is still an empty vessel: Sovereign Union

In a letter sent to all Federal politicians on 12 February, 2013, Sovereign Union alerts them of the manipulation hidden within the apology that excuses the government of being complicit in authorising and legitimising the actions of Australian state governments.

The 'empty vessel' factor and the heartlessness of no compensation is an insult and a dagger to the heart and soul, thereby increasing the pain of traumatised Peoples. Many people argue that the effort on the part of former PM Kevin Rudd to apologise was worth hearing and that it did serve to act as a catalyst towards improving and easing the trauma of our people, but then to say that our people are not worthy of reparation and compensation for those affected is yet another major slap in the face for the survivors and their families of the Stolen Generations.

Jail rate for First Nations children is soaring at an alarming rate

Aboriginal youth repeat offender

Figures show that the number of First Nations children being jailed is rising enormously, as the tide of social dysfunction in urban and regional centres has never been properly addressed.

More than 250 indigenous youth in northwestern New South Wales have been sentenced to juvenile prison terms during the past five years compared with only 12 non-Aboriginal children, The Australian newspaper reported.

Figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show the national rate of Aboriginal juvenile incarceration has risen to 31 times the non-indigenous rate and rising.

The targeting of Tarneen is a example of what John Pilger was talking about in this 2011 article - about how this mega media outlet has been targeting Aboriginal people.

The federal government’s Cashless Debit Card trials in the East Kimberley and Ceduna were recently extended. In the space of a day, the government not only released the limited evaluation of the trial, but used this to justify its extension. The extension is puzzling given that the trial has led to further economic and social harm among people compulsorily included. Some communities argued that the card would be important to curb gender-based violence. However, there are reports that domestic violence has actually increased since the card was introduced and crime increased.

Annual Gathering reignites debate on constitutional recognition

Gamilaroi man, and founder of the Sovereign Union, Mr Ghillar Anderson, is preparing to lead discussions on a variety of issues including First Nations People's sovereignty, and the government's proposed constitutional changes. "The Sovereign Union is about bringing people together to share our experiences and get a way forward as a collective group of people", says Mr Anderson. - The proposed changes are being promoted through a government-funded campaign, 'Recognise', which is currently making its way around the nation.

The urgent need for Australia to acknowledge it has a race relations problem

White Australia must consider the damage that disregard generates, and understand that from the Aboriginal perspective, white ways are not the only ways, or necessarily the best ways.
 
Many of our survey respondents expressed a willingness to improve the relationship. But so long as white Australia is resistant to Indigenous inclusion on any terms but its own, it’s hard to see how progress can be made.
