This is the Final report by Mr. Miguel Alfonso Martinez, Special Rapporteur.

Kent Lebsock from Owe Aku International Justice Program said that there may never have been a more perceptive and effective non-Indigenous advocate for North America indians than Miguel Alfonso Martinez. In 1988 he was asked by the Commission on Human Rights to prepare a study on Indigenous treaties.

This ground-breaking document is officially called the "Study on treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements between states and indigenous populations."

It is now 33 years since the Australian War Memorial (AWM) was first asked to consider recognising the "frontier wars". The suggestion came from an historian and consultant to the memorial, none other than Geoffrey Blainey.

Blainey's case is straightforward. It has now been established beyond doubt that armed conflict between black and white occurred across the continent over a long period of time, and was routinely referred to by participants and observers as a "war"; those conflicts were similar to other irregular warfare already commemorated by the memorial; so, the "frontier wars" should be commemorated also.

European settlement in Australia was bloody brutal. The idea that on small or imagined provocation you had to kill Aborigines indiscriminately was tacitly acknowledged throughout the immigrant rural communities: "how else could the land be made safe for settlers and their families?"

Here is a book review that reveals a few historical records of southern Queensland's frontier wars. An uncomfortable silence still hangs over the most controversial issue in Australian colonial history.

'Unfortunately in contemporary Australia the conservative views of Marcia Langton and Noel Pearson dominate the media. Tragically, they blindly ignore that market strategies have overwhelmingly failed to eradicate poverty and marginalisation for most indigenous peoples internationally', writes Professor Boris Frankel, an honorary fellow in the Melbourne school of land and environment, University of Melbourne.

'If Langton and Pearson's neo-liberal ideology continues in Australia, we will see even more indigenous and non-indigenous people homeless, unemployed and on welfare in the coming decade'.

The three warriors from the Brisbane Aboriginal Sovereign Embassy, arrested last December for defending the sacred fire were found not guilty today in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Police offered no evidence against Wayne Wharton, Boe Skuthorpe-Spearim and Hamish Chitts. This was in stark contrast to the period since their arrest where police first imposed draconian bail conditions which prevented the three from participating in cultural and religious ceremony and then wasted court time and tax payer money trying to keep the bail conditions in place. Eventually after three court appearances the bail conditions were dropped.

The ABC didn't disclose that the Boyer lectures by Marcia Langton late last year were grossly compromised. She received thousands of dollars in cash for her research which was obtained by mining giants Rio Tinto, Woodside and Santos - who are stealing from and destroying country and treating First Nations peoples with contempt.

Despite the obvious 'possible' prejudice by Langton, the ABC replayed the lecture over and over again throughout the whole summer holiday season, virtually saturating the country's radio-waves with Langton's very dubious views.

Sunday the 17th of February marked the 145th anniversary of the Flying Foam Massacre on the Burrup Peninsular in Northwest Western Australia, when it is estimated sixty Yaburara children, women and men were murdered by colonial gunshot.

The massacre occurred after the spearing of a police officer, Constable Griffis, who was believed to have raped a Yaburara woman. Over the following months it is estimated a total of 100-150 Yaburara were killed by way of retribution.

On 7 February, 2013 the Australian Senate will vote on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Recognition Bill 2012 despite overwhelming opposition to constitutional inclusion by the majority of Aboriginal people and the government's own acknowledgement that the proposed changes to the constitution would be rejected by a referendum.
This shows the paternalistic contempt that the Federal Government and politicians have for Aboriginal people has not changed in 112 years.
