The United Kingdom did a deal with the United States and gave them the Chagossian peoples homeland Islands so the US could build a military base. Diego Garcia, the island where most Chagossians lived appears to be the principle island used. Most Chagossians now live in Mauritius and the United Kingdom after being forcibly evicted by the British government in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
